Sinterklaas Rhinebeck 2026: Is the Festival Happening This December?

Sinterklaas Rhinebeck 2026 is on hold after the 2024 and 2025 festivals were cancelled for lack of money. Here is what happened, how to watch for a late announcement, and how to spend a December weekend in the village anyway.

6 min read

Sinterklaas Rhinebeck 2026 is not on the calendar. The festival's own site lists no date for this December, and the Lakeville Journal reported on October 27 that Sinterklaas is on hold this year while its creator, Jeanne Fleming, works through new financial problems. Anyone planning a first-Saturday-in-December trip to Rhinebeck around the Starlight Parade should plan something else, and keep one eye on the festival site in case a smaller gathering is announced late, as happened last year.

The village still does December well without it. Here is how the festival got to this point, what it was, and how a December weekend in and around Rhinebeck works for adults 21+ in 2026.

Three Decembers without the full festival

The last full Sinterklaas Festival Day in Rhinebeck ran on Saturday, December 2, 2023. The festival site marks that program as cancelled for 2024, and Rhinebeck Reality reported in January 2025 that costs piling up from previous years had pushed the organizers to take a break and rebuild their funds before continuing.

The 2025 festival was cancelled outright for lack of funding. The organizers wrote on the festival site that tariffs on the materials for the stars and lights, along with cuts to arts grants, were part of the shortfall, and that donations already received would be refunded. In place of the festival, Fleming and Hudson Valley Community Productions, the nonprofit behind Sinterklaas, held a free two-hour gathering on Saturday, December 20, 2025, in the parking lot at Foster's Coach House in the center of the village, with the Grumpuses, the Pocket Lady, the Polar Bear and a carol sing.

For 2026, the October report is the most recent word: on hold. No replacement event has been posted. That can change on short notice, which is why the festival site is the place to check rather than a regional calendar that may still be carrying an old date.

What Sinterklaas was

The festival was the creation of Jeanne Fleming, who is also the director of New York's Village Halloween Parade, and it carried the same instinct for street-scale pageantry. Its organizers described a day-long, non-denominational celebration across the village of Rhinebeck, built around the idea that children are the kings and queens of the day.

The format, as the festival site laid it out for its last full year:

  • Crowns and branches. Children made crowns and decorated branches from 10 AM to 4 PM for the evening procession.
  • Performers. More than 350 musicians, actors, magicians and costumed characters across the village, including the Dancing Bear, the Pocket Lady, Mother Holly and the Grumpuses.
  • The Children's Starlight Parade. At 6 PM, at twilight, two-story animated puppets carried by hundreds of volunteers moved through the village, with children honored in the parade and the pageant that followed.
  • The stars. Illuminated stars, sold as a fundraiser, were carried in the procession, which is why the materials cost mattered so much.

It was free, it was enormous for a village Rhinebeck's size, and it depended on a nonprofit raising the money every year. The last three Decembers show how thin that margin was.

How to know if it comes back

  • The festival site, sinterklaashudsonvalley.com, posted both the 2025 cancellation and the replacement gathering. Any 2026 announcement will land there first.
  • The events calendar carries confirmed Hudson Valley dates once organizers publish them.
  • A late, small event is possible. The 2025 gathering was announced only days before it happened. A one-afternoon program in the village is a different trip from the old all-day festival, so it suits a local or a day-tripper more than someone booking a room for it.

A December weekend in Rhinebeck without the parade

The Rhinebeck Farmers Market keeps its outdoor season going later than most in the region. Its own site lists Sundays from May 3 through December 27, 2026, 10 AM to 2 PM, rain or shine, in the municipal parking lot at 61 East Market Street. A December Sunday morning there is the most Rhinebeck thing available in the month, festival or not.

Upstate Films, the independent cinema that also runs screens in Kingston and Saugerties, programs the Starr Cinema in Rhinebeck. A matinee is the standard answer to a cold, dark December afternoon in the village.

Up Route 9G, Hudson's Winter Walk fills Warren Street on an early-December evening with storefront displays, street performers and fireworks. It ran on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 5 to 8 PM. The 2026 date had not been posted when this was published, so confirm it with the City of Hudson or Columbia County Tourism before building a weekend around it. The Hudson hub collects what is published about the city.

Licensed shops near Rhinebeck

No licensed dispensary has a Rhinebeck address on the state's verification page as of 2026. The nearest are a short drive north on Route 9 in Red Hook:

  • Upstate Pines, 7345 South Broadway, open since December 2024.
  • Lofty Supply, 7536 North Broadway, a microbusiness, the small-operator license that lets one company grow and sell its own product.

Across the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, Kingston has a cluster of licensed shops of its own, from Broadway to Route 32. The full list of addresses is on the dispensary map.

The rules, plainly

  • Adults 21+ only, with a valid government-issued photo ID. Out-of-state licenses are accepted.
  • Verify first. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov. Every licensed shop posts it near the entrance.
  • Public space. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. Village streets, the market lot and any parade route count, festival or no festival.
  • Edibles. Start low, go slow, and read the serving size on the label first.
  • The drive. Keep purchases sealed and out of reach in the car. Driving impaired is illegal in New York, and Route 9 in December is dark early.

The Rhinebeck hub gathers everything published about the village.
