Veils, Layers, Illusions with Jaz Graf
Veils, Layers, Illusions – Jaz Graf Dates: July 6 – 10, 2026 Studio: Papermaking Tuition: Sliding Scale, $450 – $1300 Lab fee: $150 Class limit: 6 Working with mulberry, cotton and overbeaten abaca fibers, we will explore light, layering and illusions in handmade paper. Stencils will be used as masks and for blowouts, a process of using water spray to create unique shapes in pulp. We will consider combinations of opacity and translucency through double-couching, and embedding materials between layers of pulp. A deckle box offers possibilities to integrate inclusions and ombre effects. We will use a forced air restraint stack dryer to flatten sheets, while embracing the natural cockle and textured surfaces inherent to mixing fibers which shrink at different rates. Come with an open mind, patience for abaca to drain, and a passion for process. All levels. Papermaking is a wet process; participants should be prepared with waterproof or water-safe shoes and clothing. This workshop will involve prolonged periods of standing, often requiring repeated movements in the upper body, and the maneuvering of heavy items. This workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist, email info@wsworkshop.org. artist-made paper, thai mulberry, bark lace, abaca, handmade paper, papermaking, fiber art
