Cannabis Delivery Services: How They Work and What to Know
## The Short Answer Cannabis delivery is a licensed service in most adult-use and medical states that brings regulated cannabis products from a licensed retailer to a legal residence. For adults 21 and older, delivery has grown as a category since 2020. The operational model varies by state; the ID-check, licensing, and consumer-protection requirements are largely similar. ## How Delivery Works **Ordering.** Most dispensaries offer online or app-based ordering. Standard menu with inventory limits. **Verification.** ID is verified at checkout (photo upload or online KYC) and again at delivery. **Payment.** Cash on delivery or pre-paid through the platform. Federal banking restrictions still apply. **Delivery.** A licensed driver brings the product to a legal address (typically a private residence in a legal state). Signature and ID check at the door. **Window.** Same-day or scheduled. Delivery fees range from free (with minimum order) to $10-20. ## What's Required - **21 or older** for adult-use delivery (state medical cards for medical delivery). - **Legal delivery address.** Most states require delivery to a private residence in a state where cannabis is legal. Hotels, public spaces, offices, and federal property are usually prohibited. - **ID check at delivery.** The driver verifies photo ID matches the order. - **Signature.** Some states require a signature; others don't. - **No interstate delivery.** Delivery cannot cross state lines. ## What's Not Allowed - Delivery to someone other than the person who placed the order (without explicit provision). - Delivery to someone visibly impaired. - Delivery outside delivery hours (most states cap delivery hours). - Delivery to prohibited addresses (schools, federal property, certain zones). ## Consumer Protections Regulated delivery includes: - **Third-party lab testing** on products (same as dispensary sales). - **Tamper-evident packaging.** - **Product return processes** for defective items. - **Complaint routing** through the state regulator. ## Unregulated Delivery The illicit-market delivery services that operated before adult-use legalization in many markets still exist. They carry: - No lab testing requirements. - No age verification standards. - No product recourse. - Legal exposure for consumers in regulated states. Use licensed services. Consumer-side convention is similar to restaurant delivery tipping (15 to 20 percent on order total). ## Where to Go Next Related reading: [first time at a dispensary](/blog/first-time-at-a-dispensary-what-to-expect-and-how-to-prepare), [licensed vs unlicensed dispensary in New York](/blog/licensed-vs-unlicensed-dispensary-new-york), and [understanding cannabis pricing](/blog/understanding-cannabis-pricing-why-costs-vary-and-how-to-find-value). --- *This article is consumer education for adults 21+.
