From New York City
The Hudson Valley is one of the few weekender destinations from New York City you can do entirely without a car. Metro-North's Hudson Line runs from Grand Central up the east bank of the Hudson — through Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Cold Spring, Beacon, Poughkeepsie — and Amtrak's Empire Service continues north to Rhinecliff and Hudson. This page is the practical cannabis map: which licensed dispensaries are within walking distance of which station, which are short-drive Lyfts, and which require renting a car. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces — that includes train platforms, train cars, and station property — so plan stops accordingly. Adults 21+.
Beacon is the most cannabis-walkable Hudson Line stop. Multiple licensed dispensaries operate on or near Main Street, all within a 10-15 minute walk from the Beacon station — and Beacon is the canonical NYC weekender stop, with Dia:Beacon, Mount Beacon, and a dense food scene all within the same Main Street stretch.
If you have time for one Metro-North-only cannabis stop on a Saturday, this is it.
Cold Spring is a smaller, slower stop than Beacon — historic Main Street, Hudson Highlands views, the trailheads for Bull Hill and Breakneck Ridge. The cannabis footprint is lighter than Beacon's; the closest licensed dispensaries are a short drive south or further north along the line.
Poughkeepsie is the northern terminus of Metro-North Hudson Line service and a stop on Amtrak's Empire Service. Multiple licensed dispensaries operate within a few minutes' drive of the station. The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park starts here, so a typical day pairs the bridge walk with a dispensary stop. (No cannabis on the bridge — state-park property.)
Hudson — the city — is on Amtrak's Empire Service, not Metro-North. Trip time from Penn Station is about 2.5 hours; the city itself is small and walkable, with antique shops, farm-to-table restaurants, and a small but distinctive cannabis presence. Olana, just south of the city, is one of the Hudson Valley's must-visit landmarks.
8:30 AM — Grand Central: catch the Hudson Line northbound. 10:00 AM — Beacon arrival. Walk Main Street, hit one or two dispensaries. 11:30 AM — Dia:Beacon (cannabis-aware visit; no cannabis on museum property). 1:30 PM — Lunch on Main Street. 3:30 PM — Either Mount Beacon hike or another dispensary stop. 6:00 PM — back on the Hudson Line. 7:30 PM — Grand Central.
All cannabis stays in the bag on the platforms and trains — both are state property where consumption is prohibited.
