From New York City
September and October are the Hudson Valley's busiest months for NYC visitors — the weather turns, the apple orchards open for pick-your-own, and the cannabis-and-apple-cider pairing has become its own quiet Hudson Valley tradition. The orchards mostly cluster in Ulster and Dutchess counties, with a few notable ones farther north. Cannabis isn't permitted on the orchard properties themselves (working farms with kids and families and tractors), but the dispensary stops fit naturally on the drive in or out. This page sketches a typical orchard day from the NYC reader's perspective. Adults 21+.
Peak picking is mid-September through late October. Different varieties ripen at different points — Honeycrisp early, Empire mid-season, Mutsu and Pink Lady later. Most orchards publish their picking calendars; check before you drive up.
Weekends are crowded; weekdays are quiet. Sunday afternoons are especially busy because the morning crowd peaks then.
Ulster County: New Paltz and surrounding towns have a high density of pick-your-own operations. Combine an orchard morning with a Mohonk hike + a New Paltz dispensary stop on the way out.
Dutchess County: Red Hook, Rhinebeck, and the area around Bard College host several long-running orchards. Pair with a Rhinebeck farmers-market stop or a Beekman Arms lunch.
Western Hudson Valley: Orange County has a smaller but solid orchard footprint, often paired with the Storm King + West Point side of the river.
No cannabis on orchard property. Most orchards are working farms; many run school field trips and family events. Keep the cannabis stops to the drive in or out.
Cider is not THC unless explicitly labeled — most orchard ciders are non-alcoholic or alcoholic, neither cannabis-infused. THC-infused cider exists in NY but only at licensed dispensaries.
