Cross-country skiing in the Hudson Valley comes down to three places and one variable. The places are Minnewaska State Park Preserve and the Mohonk Preserve on the Shawangunk Ridge, and Fahnestock Winter Park in Putnam County. The variable is snow, which in this part of New York arrives in bursts and leaves quickly. The skiers who get the most out of a valley winter keep skis in the car from late December on and go the morning after a storm, not the weekend after.
What follows is how each area works in the 2026 to 2027 season, what it costs, where to rent gear, and how adults 21+ fit the rest of the day around it.
Minnewaska State Park Preserve: groomed carriage roads on the ridge
Minnewaska, at 5281 Route 44-55 in Kerhonkson, covers more than 24,000 acres of the Shawangunk Ridge. Its broad carriage roads make natural ski trails. The park's winter recreation map lists more than 16 miles of groomed carriage roads for cross-country skiing when snow allows, plus more than 20 miles of trails for snowshoeing. State Parks counts Minnewaska as one of only two fully groomed ski trail systems in the whole state park system.
- Fees. The park lists ski trail fees of $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and juniors, on top of a $10 vehicle fee.
- Rentals. Snowshoes rent for $15 a day for adults and $14 for juniors.
- Hours. From November 1, 2026, to March 8, 2027, vehicle entry runs 9 AM to 5 PM.
- Parking. The Lake Minnewaska lot and Sam's Point fill on good-weather days and can close when full. Parking on the road shoulders is not allowed, so an early start is the plan.
- Dogs. Pets are not permitted on ski trails when they are groomed and open for skiing only.
Grooming depends on snow depth, so call the park office at 845-255-0752 or check its conditions page the morning of.
Mohonk Preserve: the Trapps and Spring Farm
The Mohonk Preserve, next door on the same ridge above New Paltz, has about 70 miles of carriage roads and trails. When conditions allow, it grooms in two areas:
- West Trapps. Overcliff Road is set aside for skiing and snowshoeing, and Trapps Road is a groomed multi-use route. Undercliff Road is not groomed.
- Spring Farm. Spring Farm Road, Cedar Drive and Bonticou Road may be groomed, and a winter activities map is posted at the trailhead.
Every other trail is open to ungroomed skiing, and snowshoes are allowed anywhere as long as they stay out of the ski tracks. Walkers should keep off groomed carriage roads entirely, and dogs stay off groomed trails. A day pass or membership is required, sold online, at the trailheads and at the Visitor Center (845-255-0919).
The Preserve has no rental gear on site and points skiers to Rock and Snow, the outdoor shop in New Paltz. For conditions, it suggests its own trails page, the Shawangunk Nordic Ski Association's Facebook page and the state Mesonet weather station at Spring Farm.
The New Paltz hub covers the village at the foot of the ridge.
Fahnestock Winter Park: the full-service option
Fahnestock Winter Park, at 1570 Route 301 in Carmel, is the one place in the region that runs like a Nordic center. A January 2026 State Parks post called it the only full-service cross-country ski area south of the Adirondacks and Vermont, and its posted details explain why:
- Trails. About 20 kilometers of machine-groomed trails, set for both classic and skate skiing, plus three blazed snowshoe trails for beginner, intermediate and advanced.
- Rentals. Classic and skate skis at $18 a day for adults and $15 for juniors; snowshoes at $15 a day for adults; sled tubes at $4 an hour.
- Trail pass. $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and juniors. The Empire Pass is not accepted here.
- Sledding. A groomed sledding hill sits next to the parking lot, with a separate $3 pass.
- Hours. 9 AM to 4:30 PM daily, snow permitting, with the gate closing at 5 PM. Closed December 25.
The catch is the snow line. State Parks says the park opens once about seven inches of snow are on the ground, and in a thin winter that can mean a handful of weekends. Call 845-225-3998 before leaving. Rates are as posted by the park; confirm them for the new season.
Closer to the train: Blue Mountain Reservation
For Westchester skiers, Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill, a 1,538-acre county park at 435 Welcher Avenue, lists cross-country skiing among its winter uses. It is a county park with trails rather than a Nordic center, open 8 AM to dusk year-round, and the most convenient option on this list for skiers who live in northern Westchester. The Peekskill hub covers the city around it.
Planning a ski day
- Go after the storm. Valley snow rarely lasts a full week. The first clear morning after a snowfall is the window.
- Check two sources. The park or preserve's own conditions page, then a phone call. Grooming reports change by the hour after a thaw.
- Dress in layers. Cross-country skiing runs warm on the climbs and cold on the descents and at the car.
- Watch the clock. In early January the light goes before 5 PM, and Minnewaska's vehicle gate closes at 5.
- Snowshoes as the fallback. When there is snow but not enough to groom, all three areas still work on snowshoes.
The cannabis rules
Minnewaska and Fahnestock are state parks, Blue Mountain is a county park, and the Mohonk Preserve sets its own visitor rules. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces, which covers the state park trails, lots and buildings outright. Adults 21+ shopping a licensed store on the way, in New Paltz, Peekskill or Beacon, should verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov and keep purchases sealed in the car. With edibles, start low and go slow, and read the serving size on the label. Driving impaired is illegal, and the ridge roads in winter leave no margin.
Every licensed address is on the dispensary map, and winter dates around the valley are on the events calendar.
