Rhinebeck Dispensaries: Why There Are None in Town and Where to Shop Instead

Rhinebeck's village and town both opted out of cannabis retail in 2021. The nearest licensed shops are a few miles up Route 9 in Red Hook, across the bridge in Kingston, or north in Hudson.

Anyone searching for Rhinebeck dispensaries gets a short answer first: there are none in Rhinebeck, and none are coming soon. Both the Village and the Town of Rhinebeck opted out of retail cannabis sales in 2021, and the state's license register shows no Rhinebeck storefront as of 2026. For adults 21+, the nearest licensed shops sit a few miles up Route 9 in Red Hook, across the river in Kingston, or north in Hudson, and none of them takes more planning than a Sunday market run.

Why Rhinebeck has no shop

When New York legalized adult-use cannabis in 2021, every city, town and village had until December 31, 2021 to opt out of hosting dispensaries, on-site consumption sites, or both. Rhinebeck did it twice. The Town board voted 4 to 1 on September 1, 2021 to prohibit retail sales. The Village sent the question to a special election on November 16, 2021, and voters chose 185 to 115 to keep dispensaries out and 235 to 63 to keep consumption lounges out. Both the Town and the Village appear on the Office of Cannabis Management's official opt-out list for both license types.

The opt-out window has closed, but the door only swings one way: a municipality that opted out can opt back in by repealing its local law. Rhinebeck hasn't. Until it does, any storefront selling cannabis inside the village or town is unlicensed, whatever the window decal says.

Red Hook: the closest licensed option

Red Hook, the next town north on Route 9, made a different call. Both the town and the village opted out of consumption lounges only, which left retail legal. Two licensed shops operate there as of 2026:

  • Upstate Pines, 7345 South Broadway. It sits on the Route 9 stretch south of the village, the Rhinebeck side of town, and has been open since late 2024.
  • Lady Green Sleeves, 7536 North Broadway, north of the village center. It holds a microbusiness license, the New York category that lets a small operator grow, process and sell its own product under one license.

Red Hook works as a Rhinebeck add-on because it is the same road. Up Route 9, a stop, and back down for lunch, with the shopping done before the village fills up.

Kingston: across the bridge, more choice

The Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge puts Kingston in easy reach, and Kingston carries the deepest licensed bench in the mid-Hudson. Shops on the state register there include Lucky Green Ladies on South Wall Street, Kingston Cannabis on Broadway, Canna Planet on Ulster Avenue and Catskill Mountain High in Kingston Plaza. For a Rhinebeck weekend, the move is to fold Kingston into a day that already crosses the river, rather than making a special trip.

Delivery is the other route in. Licensed dispensaries can deliver to residential addresses anywhere in New York, opt-out towns included, and several Kingston shops run delivery. Each shop draws its own zone, so enter the Rhinebeck address at checkout to see whether it qualifies. Orders are prepaid, cash is not accepted at the door, and the driver checks a 21+ photo ID and takes a signature on arrival.

Hudson and Pine Plains

North of Red Hook, Hudson has two licensed shops: Riverbend on Warren Street, the city's main drag, and Goldleaf on Fairview Avenue, the commercial strip on the way into town. To the east, Pine Plains has had a licensed shop since summer 2026, Two Budz on South Main Street, which helps anyone staying out toward the Taconic.

What to know before the drive

  • ID. Adults 21+ need a valid government photo ID: any US driver's license or non-driver ID, a passport from any country, or a US military ID.
  • Limits. Adults can possess up to three ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrate.
  • Edibles. State rules cap edibles at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. Start low, go slow.
  • Tax. A 13 percent retail cannabis tax applies, 9 percent state and 4 percent local. Cannabis is exempt from regular sales tax.
  • Verification. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov before buying anything, anywhere.
  • Hours. They shift by season and by shop. Check the shop's own site the day you go.

Building the rest of the Rhinebeck day

The shop stop takes twenty minutes; Rhinebeck fills the rest. The Rhinebeck Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM in the municipal parking lot through December 27, 2026, with a smaller lineup of vendors in the late-season weeks after November 22. It is the reason to put a Rhinebeck day on a Sunday rather than a Saturday.

The New York State Sheep and Wool Festival takes the Dutchess County Fairgrounds on October 17 and 18, 2026, 9 AM to 5 PM Saturday and 9 AM to 4 PM Sunday. Rhinebeck rooms book up early for it. A base in Red Hook or Kingston that weekend does double duty: closer to a licensed shop, and a short drive to the fairgrounds. Hyde Park, south on Route 9, is the other overflow option, though it has no operating licensed shop as of 2026.

The rules that travel with you

Purchases stay sealed for the drive. Cannabis cannot be consumed in a motor vehicle, even parked, and driving impaired is illegal. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. State guidance adds businesses, restaurants including their patios, and most public and state parks to the list of places where it is off-limits. Lodging rules are set by each property, so ask before booking rather than after arriving.

Licensed options across the valley are on the dispensary map, and the season's programming is on the events calendar.
