Woodcuts & Wood Engravings: A Survey from the Permanent Collection

Woodcuts & Wood Engravings: A Survey from the Permanent Collection EXHIBITION: January 23–April 26, 2026 OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, January 24, 4-6pm TOWBIN WING This show brings together 37 woodcuts and wood engravings from WAAM’s permanent collection, celebrating the tradition of 20th-century relief printmaking in the Woodstock Art Colony. The exhibition spans multiple generations and styles, offering an exploration into how artists have used woodblocks to create everything from bold, graphic images to incredibly detailed scenes. Together, these prints show off the hands-on beauty of the medium and the lasting impact Woodstock artists have had on wood-based printmaking and the region’s creative identity. Examples of standout pieces include Pamela Vinton Ravenel’s charming 1929 print of the WAA building—back when the organization was only eight years old—and Petra Cabot’s regal 1925 color woodcut The Eight Bold Reigners [Rulers]. The show also features two large, color-saturated woodcuts by Carol Summers, Aurora Boracha (1994) and The Grave of Santa Ana’s Leg (1992), plus a striking 1936 series of wood engravings by Arnold Wiltz.
