Ulster County launches a one-mile trail route to encourage everyday movement

Ulster County’s Department of Health used National Public Health Week to spotlight everyday exercise, unveiling a new “Move-A-Mile” route on the O&W Connector Trail in Kingston on Thursday, April 9. Public Health Director Dr. Eve Walter led the launch alongside Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger, then joined residents for a guided one-mile community walk. “Movement doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective,” said Dr. Walter. “Whether you walk or use a mobility device, getting out for even a mile can support your physical and mental health while connecting you with your community.” The Move-A-Mile is a half-mile out-and-back paved path, marked with new signage inviting people to walk, roll, stroll, or run. County health officials described the route as designed for people of all ages and abilities. It sits on the O&W Connector Trail, which links the Kingston Greenline system to the 27-mile O&W Rail Trail. The project is part of the Department of Health’s “Movement is Medicine” initiative, a countywide effort to promote physical activity as a tool for preventing chronic disease and improving overall well-being.
