Kingston extends free housing legal help for low-income renters
Having a landlord issue in Kingston but can’t afford legal counsel? A critical resource for low-income Kingston renters will continue to be available for the foreseeable future, as city officials announced a contract extension with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) to provide legal help for housing matters through the Right to Counsel Program. To qualify, households must have income at or below 120% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Currently that figure is $100,680 for 1 person, gradually increasing to $189,840 for an 8-person household. One caveat: The program stipulates at least half of all clients served should have an annual income at or below 100% AMI. LSHV can help with everything from legal advice to actual representation over issues such as evictions, unlawful rent increases, lack of repairs and discrimination. Tenants can begin intake by calling 1-877-574-8529, visiting LSHV offices at 918 Ulster Avenue, or clicking the ‘Get Legal Help Now’ button on lshv.org . The program was funded to the tune of $500,000 through monies the city obtained in the American Rescue Plan Act.
